Brazilian architect brings playful approach to grassroots development<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Harvard students played a game that is helping to change the world. Of course, anyone outside the small classroom in Gund Hall might have thought the students were just relieving academic stress and pressure, judging from their joyous shrieks of laughter.<\/p>\n

Peeking inside, an observer might have been amused at the group of 40 students playing \u201cTraffic.\u201d In the game, they gather in a circle and in five seconds must reform the circle, but only after shaking hands with five others \u2014 and then only after touching the shoulder of five others, and then only after touching the nose of five others.<\/p>\n

Ah, but there was method to the madness. The maestro of the mayhem was Brazilian urban specialist, architect, activist, and social media game designer Edgard Gouveia Jr., who has won international attention for his approach to grassroots development and research on global change through play.<\/p>\n

In 2008, Gouveia created the Internet-based \u201cOasis Game,\u201d which first brought aid to a flood-devastated section of Brazil; soon \u201cOasis Games\u201d were created for other parts of the world. He is continuing to bring together urban professionals and college students with residents to create relevant and useful public places through a new game, \u201cPlay the Call.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an appearance sponsored by the Latin and China Harvard Graduate School of Design groups, Gouveia began his presentation by asking students for their expectations for the evening. Students responded with questions like: How do you approach people without advertising something? How do you sustain interest? Mireille Kameni, an urban design master\u2019s student, wanted to hear about increasing access to resources. Oscar Malaspina, also an urban design master\u2019s student, was curious about language barriers. Another student asked, \u201cHow do you learn from failure? What happens when you fail?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never fail,\u201d joked Gouveia, who set a tone of levity even when approaching difficult issues.<\/p>\n

He next put students through a series of exercises, from touching their fingertips to their toes in various ways, to orchestrating the \u201c1-2-3 game,\u201d which involved chanting \u201cone, two, three,\u201d while clapping and jumping. Gouveia exhorted students to draw lessons from the play, \u201cas if in the game, as if in life; as if in life, as if in the game,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

While students caught their breath, he challenged them. \u201cWho won the \u20181-2-3 game\u2019?\u201d \u201cAll of us,\u201d came the answer. \u201cIs it possible for a game where everyone wins?\u201d he asked. Noted Caroline James, an architecture graduate student, \u201cThe punishment for messing up [students had to do a quick shimmy] was almost as fun as the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gouveia then showed how game-play principles were used to complete projects in poor areas of Brazil and Mexico. Young professionals formed teams (both on-site and via the Internet) to build bridges, schools, gardens, and parks in struggling areas.<\/p>\n

But the rules are different from other aid projects. The professionals on-site must first find \u201cthree manifestations of beauty\u201d in the community. They must listen to residents and press them repeatedly for their dreams, not just their problems<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are not coming here to help them or save them; you are here to learn from them,\u201d Gouveia said. Based on those dreams, teams build models for the community for feedback. Then they do the \u201cmiracle.\u201d In five days, they build the project with local resources and minimum outside donations.<\/p>\n

Harvard students were intrigued but wary. Malaspina was curious about differences between rural and urban areas. James wanted to know if the model changed according to different communities? No, said Gouveia, it was always the same. Alan Waxman, working on a master\u2019s in landscape architecture, said Gouveia\u2019s vision made him \u201cwant to sign up today,\u201d but that very enthusiasm made him suspicious, citing the \u201cif you find the Buddha, kill him\u201d theory.<\/p>\n

Gouveia insisted the game approach of connecting communities was \u201cpowerful,\u201d saying, \u201cI truly believe in the inner power of movements.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the event, Malaspina, who is from Peru, said he was \u201cstill processing\u201d Gouveia\u2019s ideas, stressing the need to match professionals with a community effectively. Kameni, who is from Angola, found both realistic and fantastical elements in Gouveia\u2019s methods, adding \u201cthat is not necessarily a bad thing.\u201d At communities she has visited, \u201cThe will is there, and often times the simplest project is the most effective anyways.\u201d James singled out the need to switch from an outdated, \u201csympathetic\u201d approach to an \u201cempathetic\u201d approach, with a \u201csense of wonder and curiosity when you\u2019re working with people. I definitely agree with that approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elena Tudela of the Latin Design School group, which co-organized the event, was pleased at the turnout. \u201cThis is a first-hand experience of something that has been successful. So it is interesting to see those methods.\u201d She said the games were \u201ca very good example of how to create a sense of community.\u201d Tian Ren of the China Design School group called the event inspiring.<\/p>\n
